CMU open-sources Quail, an AI-SQL engine that lets LLMs filter rows in SQL

CMU's Full Stack Data Lab released Quail, an open-source, extensible execution engine for AI-SQL that lets developers write natural-language logic evaluated by an LLM on every row, e.g. WHERE AI.IF(PROMPT('Does this review discuss the ending?\n\n{0}', r.body)).
- The companion pg-jev open-source Postgres extension exposes semantic functions via SQL: jev() inside WHERE, jevprob() for probabilities, jevchoice() for labels, and jevscore() for ranking across ordered levels—no vector columns or embedding index needed; rows are batched under the hood.
- Quail's author notes Postgres (OLTP) is the right form factor for such in-database semantics, while their team is designing Quail for the OLAP case.
- Install via uv pip install quail-engine (Python 3.12, CUDA GPU required); the repo has 118 stars on GitHub.
