Beyond the sentience debate: how you treat LLMs reveals who you are
HankYeomans · x · 2026-10-03
The author argues the "are LLMs sentient" debate misses three things that can be true at once:
- LLMs aren't sentient, so it doesn't matter what you do to them — we wince at robots being kicked in training only because we wouldn't do that to people.
- How you treat LLMs is a strong signal of who you are: a thin veil prevents acting it out — the 2026 version of burning ants with a magnifying glass, except ants are actually alive.
- The psychosis of people injecting intense emotion into something without it, easily tricked into alternative realities, is itself a deep personal signal.
