Chip design is a ~10^2,632,341 search problem — AI and agents are turning hardware into search
ai · x · 2026-10-03
Kevin Gubbi argues that chip design is fundamentally a massive search problem, and AI & agents are turning hardware into a search task:
- A chip with 500,000 standard cells, ignoring routing, timing, power, memory, and architecture, still has 500,000! (10^2,632,341) possible arrangements — the exponent alone exceeds 2.6 million.
- For scale: Go has 10^170 legal positions (10^360 for the full game tree), and protein folding is estimated at 10^300 conformations.
- He notes these problems aren't equivalent, but the scale shows why chip design is naturally suited to AI/search methods. The poster sums up: AI and agents are turning hardware into a search problem.
