Open-source coding agent Mixdog claims 63% fewer tokens than Codex at same success rate
RevolutionaryLock535 · reddit · 2026-10-03
A developer released Mixdog, a free Apache-2.0 coding agent for Windows focused on reducing token usage.
- In a self-run Terminal-Bench 2.1 comparison with the same model and reasoning settings, Mixdog used 62.86% fewer total tokens (including cached input) than Codex, with success rates of 86.5% vs 86.1%; benchmark setup and raw results are public in the repo.
- The desktop app unifies subscription accounts and API models, lets you assign different models to agent roles with orchestration, and supports separate sessions plus lead-agent delegation.
- Context management uses scoped tools, provider-aware caching, and structured compaction, with search over past work and project memory; workflows and agent definitions are stored as Markdown packs with visual controls.
- Windows-first release; the installer is unsigned so SmartScreen will warn.
