GitHub's gh-stack v0.2.0 adds git worktree support for stacked PR workflows
mariorod1 · x · 2026-10-03
GitHub released gh-stack v0.2.0, its official CLI extension for managing stacked branches and PRs, with git worktree support as the headline feature:
- Repo-level tracking: stack state now lives in a shared catalog (<common-dir>/gh-stack) instead of the init directory, so worktrees can hold independent stacks or different branches of the same stack without losing tracking when a checkout is removed.
- Automatic migration: existing per-directory tracking files migrate automatically when definitions agree or describe separate stacks (backups preserved; conflicts halt with guidance).
- Cross-worktree operations: init / add can adopt a branch checked out in another worktree without switching checkouts.
- Atomic writes: catalog writes are now atomic, so commands never read a corrupt state.
Install with gh extension install github/gh-stack.
