A survey-style count across the S&P 500 finds 74% of companies claim an AI plan or goal, yet only 2% disclose a metric they track over time — and zero companies break AI out as its own tracked line. The "tracked metric" share doubled from 1% to 2% in a quarter; at that pace, the author jokes, the whole index reaches accountability in 25 years.
Drawing on client work, he notes teams report usage (seats activated, copilots rolled out) because it's easy to count, but CFOs need cycle time, defect rates, and volume absorbed without new hires — that's what keeps AI budgets alive past year two. His advice for 2027 AI roadmaps: baseline one operational metric before deploying, then report it every quarter, including the quarters it doesn't move.
