FChollet tells Gary Marcus the transductive-to-inductive shift was AI's biggest jump
fchollet · x · 2026-10-03
François Chollet pushed back on Gary Marcus's framing of recent AI progress, highlighting three key changes:
- The switch from the transductive to the inductive paradigm — by far the biggest jump
- Symbolic tool use, code execution, and harnesses
- Training models on code execution and harnesses so they encode symbolic behavior
He acknowledged that code interpreters, Lean-style verification, and symbolic search are critical contributors but depend on the above foundation. His takeaway: current AI systems have the highest symbolic affinity of any AI approach in the past 20 years, aside from symbolic learning itself.
