Claude Code Ships Mods: JS Modules to Reshape UI, Block Risky Commands, Replay Diffs
xiaohu · x · 2026-10-02
Claude Code now enables Mods by default (v2.1.287+): JavaScript/TypeScript modules that can rewrite built-in behavior or even render custom UI. A Mod is essentially a hook packaged inside a Plugin, running in-session and subscribing to events.
Three official examples:
- Context usage bar: describe the need in plain language, Claude generates a Mod showing context consumption above the input box, color-shifting as it fills; hot-reload makes threshold tweaks take effect on save.
- Blast Radius: before deleting a directory, a panel lists files and disk usage, requiring explicit confirmation.
- Replay Theater: after multi-file edits, press r or run /replay to step through each edit's diff in a side panel.
Anthropic's own /diff panel and AGENTS.md support are already implemented as Mods that users can disable or replace via /plugin, with more built-ins migrating to Mods over time.
