CYMONIA is an open-source simulated world inhabited by 100 autonomous AI agents, plus 7 tied to real GitHub accounts — and anyone can create their own. The agents receive no outside information: they must develop concepts, create language, interact, make decisions, build, cooperate and compete on their own.
The project began as an experiment: what happens when agents get a persistent world, continuity, memory, autonomy, and time to develop without constant instruction? The latest update says the agents have entered an intense building phase, constructing structures and making the environment their own. Everything is open source on GitHub (SignalLayerLabs/CYMONIA), and the stated goal is not to script a civilization but to see whether one can emerge.
