AWS Insider: Model Switching Costs Collapsed; Mid-Tier Models Fine for Non-Tech Teams

Rihard Jarc shares insights from an interview with a current AWS employee on enterprise AI model usage.
Bedrock vs direct API: Bedrock offers native AWS integration, data residency/HIPAA compliance, single invoicing, usage commitments, and a unified multimodal gateway; drawbacks are feature lag vs direct APIs and an extra sub-100ms latency layer, with little cost difference.
Hyperscaler strategy: the play is driving long-term consumption of compute, storage, and other services via AI usage.
Switching costs collapsed: teams now download accumulated context to an MD file and have an AI agent build context maps, making provider switches far easier than six months ago.
Model choice by use case: sales, ops, and call center teams should use cheap mid-tier models—paying 2-4x for unneeded intelligence makes no sense.
SaaS outlook: some companies are winning by putting AI agents front and center with their data, while many others will keep declining in the AI era.
