Perplexity launches Fast Search API on Rust engine Photon, 230ms p95 latency

Perplexity has introduced Fast Search in its Search API, powered by Photon, its new Rust-based retrieval and ranking service: 95% of search results return in 230 ms or less (sub-250ms p95) while still ranking highly on relevance and accuracy benchmarks.
CEO Arav Srinivas added that Photon was built by a small team plus hundreds of auto-research loops powered by a more capable internal version of Perplexity Computer, and these loops will continually hill-climb the speed-accuracy Pareto frontier toward the fastest, most accurate search infrastructure in the world.
