C5R says it built a research facility run entirely by AI in 12 weeks, where AI designs, executes, and observes experiments end-to-end across biology, chemistry, and materials science.
It also introduced SciUniverse, a benchmark measuring AI's ability to do real-world scientific research.
Founder akilian recounts going all-in on biology 18 months ago — building a lab in his apartment (worms!), then joining one at UCSF — and founding C5R after seeing that models advanced rapidly in the virtual world but fell short in real labs.
