'Burn or refund': a $10 pay-to-reach inbox design that kills spam incentives
seanwbren · x · 2026-09-24
Replying to Peter Denton's 'pay to reach me' idea on XMTP, seanwbren proposes a refinement: a $10 USDC 'burn or refund' mechanism — the recipient refunds the fee if the message is valuable, burns it if annoying. This removes the incentive to accept messages just for the money, and fees can be raised until unwanted messages disappear. Cold outreach isn't dead, but free cold outreach is.
