arXiv math submissions jump 33.5% in 2026, paper links surge to generative AI

A new arXiv paper uses regularized synthetic control on 2,080 monthly observations across twenty arXiv archives to quantify generative AI's impact on theoretical research. In the first 8 months of 2026, Mathematics recorded 47,127 entries — 33.5% above 2025 and 11.9% above a synthetic counterfactual of 42,113, with robustness designs still showing 9.6–14.9% anomalies.
- Growth is broad: 29 of 30 math subfields expanded, and Mathematics shows the largest anomaly among 15 placebo archives
- The author panel shows a thickening repeated-output tail: authors with 5+ submissions rose from 2.45% to 3.80%, 10+ from 0.21% to 0.49%
- The authors conclude Mathematics has entered a new production regime, consistent with delayed AI diffusion and capability-threshold effects on verifiable research tasks — and argue AI-era science must scale verification as aggressively as generation
