AI may help us 'talk to dolphins' — but what does it do for the animals?

A Guardian feature on the ethics of using AI in animal-communication research. At Shark Bay, Australia, University of Bristol's Stephanie King co-leads one of the world's longest-running wild dolphin research projects and increasingly integrates AI into data processing: 'used responsibly, AI can transform what we can do with the data.' But asked whether AI will let us 'speak dolphin,' she says focusing on that question does the animals a disservice — the work should stay animal-centered, transparent and respectful rather than serving human curiosity.
