Small local models (3B-7B) confidently state wrong specifics — exact numbers, flags, versions. The author built pi-ultra-scout, a free extension for the pi coding agent: when the model is about to state something error-prone, it spins up a second agent that opens a real browser, reads the actual docs/repo/npm page, and returns the verified answer with sources.
- Fully local, no API keys; only the verification step goes online
- Same task tested: without the extension the model gave up halfway; with it, the task was completed perfectly with real citations
- The smaller the model, the bigger the lift; big models barely benefit
Install: pi install npm:pi-ultra-scout, or type /ulw in a session; works with any provider pi supports, including a local llama.cpp router.
