30k AI PhD students vs 60k ICLR abstracts: the math behind paper inflation
srchvrs · x · 2026-09-21
A back-of-envelope take on conference paper inflation: with roughly 30k PhD students working on AI and adjacent areas globally, if half of ICLR's 60k abstracts are placeholder re-submissions timed around NeurIPS, that works out to about one paper per PhD student — so the surge shouldn't be surprising. A replier adds that industry labs do publish independently, at least sometimes.
