Bill Gates proposes taxing robots and AI tokens to fund the automation transition

Bill Gates is reviving the idea of a robot tax: if a robot or AI does the same job as a human, it should pay taxes like the worker it replaced. His argument: hiring humans carries payroll and tax costs, while robots are just amortized investments, giving firms strong incentives to replace people.
Going further in 2026, he proposes taxing robots at the level the laid-off employee would have paid, plus a tax on AI tokens for heavy model usage, while reserving certain jobs for humans (childcare, elder care, judiciary, delivering medical diagnoses). The goal is to fund retraining, education, and social protection as automation erodes labor-tax revenues.
In France and Europe this remains theoretical: the EU backed off in 2017 under industry pressure, and no such tax exists. Economists including Summers call it 'taxing productivity' and question how to even define a robot in the AI era.
