Fields Medalist Cédric Villani 'shaken' by OpenAI's Millennium Problem solution
Kyrannio · x · 2026-09-20
Fields Medalist Cédric Villani has dramatically reversed his stance on LLMs. In June 2026 he said LLMs are not intelligent and understand nothing of what they say; by September 19, after OpenAI's announcement of a solution to a Millennium Prize Problem, he told French media he was "shaken," describing "an atmosphere of the end of history" and calling it "a cataclysm unlike anything mathematics has ever known." The reversal is being widely shared as a landmark moment in the debate over whether LLMs can do real mathematics.
