Gary Marcus fires back at Hinton: "he made up the quote"
GaryMarcus · x · 2026-09-19
Gary Marcus boosted and responded to a post defending him in his ongoing feud with Geoffrey Hinton. The quoted post argued that Hinton spent years claiming transformers produce emergent properties, only for paper after paper to show transformers don't generalize beyond their training set—making his criticism of Gary rich—while accusing Hinton of departing science into "AI psychosis" and faith-based AI infomercials.
Marcus's own reply was sharper: "even worse, let's not forget that Hinton made up the quote." Another round in a long-running dispute between two high-profile AI figures.
