SpaceX reportedly weighed buying data from failed startups to train Grok

Bloomberg reports SpaceX internally discussed buying customer and operational data from struggling or defunct startups to improve Grok, a deal still in informal stages.
Grok's training data has come from X content (personality) and the AI Tutors annotation team, which recently changed leadership—Jack Garabedian, a Starlink veteran, replaced Diego Pasini. Musk told SpaceX employees all SpaceX information, including employee work traces, would train Grok. Defunct startups' customer and operations data would add the missing piece: real business scenarios.
The playbook isn't unique: Google offered $10M for bankrupt Spirit Airlines' de-identified business data, shelved over privacy concerns. Context: per WSJ, Grok downloads fell from 20M+ in January to 8.3M in April, with weak conversion versus OpenAI and Anthropic.
