NHTSA launches ASCEND consortium for AV standards, setting up Tesla's three-timeline race
JOBhakdi · x · 2026-09-18
NHTSA announced the ASCEND consortium, a cooperation agreement with SAE to accelerate data-driven autonomous vehicle performance standards and inform updated FMVSS rules — noting current regulations were written when no one envisioned vehicles without human drivers, tethering future tech to rules of the past.
Analyst JOBhakdi argues Tesla's NHTSA audit is now a race between three timelines: (1) the audit itself, which Tesla is very unlikely to pass since its self-certification conflicts with current rules; (2) NHTSA's proposed rule changes, which could cancel parts of the audit or make passing far more likely; (3) a new framework allowing unlimited Robotaxi deployment. He expects timeline two to beat timeline one, giving Tesla breathing room to scale, with a new framework hopefully before 2028.
