Toyota unveils ELEY, a gentle-touch humanoid robot built on its HSR research

Toyota's Frontier Research Center announced ELEY, the next-generation mobile manipulator descended from its Human Support Robot (HSR) first shown in 2012. Aimed at labor shortages and skill transfer, ELEY embodies lessons from HSR research—whose autonomous navigation now powers the hospital transport robot Potaro—around a core challenge: robots tend to break objects when touching them, requiring arms capable of gentle contact. Toyota leverages Physical AI, letting robots perceive environments and learn human-level skills by imitating people.
