Toyota to Deploy 400,000 ELEY Humanoid Robots in Factories, $6.4B/Year

Toyota will invest roughly JPY 1 trillion ($6.4B) per year in factory upgrades starting 2028, deploying 400,000 humanoid robots across Toyota and its group network — 150,000 in Toyota's own plants, 250,000 at group companies and suppliers.

The robot is ELEY, Toyota's in-house mobile humanoid platform: wheeled rather than bipedal, 50 kg, focused on Physical AI, skill transfer and complex physical contact. ELEY can learn tasks from experienced workers (part handling, fabric folding) and Toyota is exploring cross-site skill transfer.

Toyota is also piloting Agility Robotics' Digit at its Canadian plant, with a deal for 7 robots in manufacturing, supply chain and logistics — developing ELEY in-house while putting Digit into real production.
