DARPA surgical AI competition kicks off, veterans liken it to the 2004 self-driving challenge

The DARPA Surgical Competition is officially live. A surgical robotics/AI researcher since 2017 notes that full surgical automation isn't possible today despite press hype, but the community finally gets a real crack at the problem — like DARPA's first self-driving challenge, where the winner covered just 7 of 142 miles yet seeded an entire industry. Falling short is not failure.
