Researchers at the University of Michigan, including Mark Guzdial, published an open-access paper, "Understanding online conversations through fractal dimension," borrowing a metric from botanical branching to gauge how sparse or complex online discussion threads become.
Measuring Reddit posts about AI, they found purely technical threads (e.g., algorithm distinctions) have lower fractal dimension, while controversial topics like job loss and racial bias produce significantly more complex branching structures. A companion sentiment analysis supports the split.
The work links semantic and structural analysis of conversations and proposes fractal dimension as a proxy for conversational "health."
