Software engineering legend Grady Booch publicly criticized an arXiv paper titled "The End of Software Engineering: How AI Agents Are Fundamentally Restructuring the Software Paradigm." The paper argues LLM-driven agents constitute a paradigm shift — code becomes ephemeral tooling in an LLM reasoning loop rather than the carrier of decision logic, moving toward an "Agent-as-a-Service" era, with a four-stage roadmap toward self-evolving agent ecosystems. Booch, who has read many well-researched papers on software engineering, flatly stated: "This is not one of them."
