Anthropic FDE explains when enterprises truly need Forward Deployed Engineers
xiaohu · x · 2026-09-17
Kevin Bai, an FDE at Anthropic (previously Palantir, and first FDE hire at Rippling where he grew the team to 25 in a year), gave an "FDE 101" talk at AI Engineer World's Fair.
Key points:
- Sell outcomes, not platforms: FDE bundles business understanding, solution assembly, and a working result into the purchase itself — FDEs are part of sales and delivery, not post-sale remediation.
- Fit criteria: FDE works for technically complex products sold to buyers without engineering capacity; if every customer requires building from scratch, the team degenerates into outsourced dev work.
- He frames FDE as extending the early-stage Design Partnership model into long-term enterprise delivery, and uses ACV comparisons (e.g., Palantir) to illustrate per-customer revenue differences and the two "gates" to pass before building an FDE team.
