New AI underwriting company insures frontier models, echoing boiler insurance and UL

The Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company has assembled a coalition to tackle frontier AI risk through auditing and insurance. RajivDattani explains the logic: insurance gives someone a reason to figure out how a technology actually works — just as Hartford Steam Boiler (1866) built an industry on inspecting and insuring boilers, with its standards becoming design specs, and property insurers funded UL in 1894 to investigate electrical fire risks. The bet: underwriting incentives can produce rigorous frontier-model audits and safety standards, a market-based governance mechanism for AI.
