Paper2Agent published in Nature: turning papers into collaborating virtual authors

James Zou's team at Stanford has published Paper2Agent in Nature. The project transforms scientific papers from passive documents into "virtual authors" — AI agents that answer questions, apply the paper's methods, and collaborate with other paper agents to make new discoveries.
Key idea: papers are written for humans, and simply feeding a PDF to an LLM misses key insights. Instead, the AI sets up a virtual lab to run code, test methods, and reproduce the paper's results, gaining hands-on experience rather than just reading.
The output is an automatically generated "paper MCP" capturing the paper's know-hows, tools, and data. The authors claim giving an LLM this paper MCP is more accurate and efficient than giving it the original paper plus code repo.
