DeepMind launches interdisciplinary institute to study AGI's economic and social impact

Demis Hassabis announced the expansion of the DeepMind Institute with co-founder Shane Legg, bringing interdisciplinary research to bear on key questions for the AGI era.
The launch includes several essays:
- Reasoning transparency: Rohin Shah and Anca Dragan argue that reading a model's chain of thought is a window for monitoring scheming and deception that must be kept open.
- Economic policy for AGI: Julian Jacobs and Alex Imas evaluate eleven policies societies could adopt to manage AI-driven economic disruption.
- Principles for a new utopianism: Stephen Cave proposes a pragmatic utopianism of humility and hope.
- Frontier AI framework: Hassabis outlines a dynamic approach to testing frontier model capabilities that incentivizes responsible behavior.
