OpenAI and Anthropic claim AI-discovered proofs disprove the Exponential Time Hypothesis
emmanuelvivier · x · 2026-11-02
OpenAI and Anthropic both claim to have disproved the 27-year-old Exponential Time Hypothesis, a cornerstone of complexity theory and algorithm design. The AI-produced proofs (published on GitHub in natural language and machine-checkable Lean) are unverified; OpenAI has recruited the hypothesis's original UCSD proposers and an MIT refuter of an ETH variant to organize verification. Linköping professor Peter Jonsson says work due at IEEE FOCS is now "dead."
