Quoted virologist anselmlevskaya, who has hand-built DNA synthesizers and sequenced/Engineered viruses professionally, lays out why it doesn't hold: sequence delivery to a synthesis provider is far from a weapon—you still must assemble and bootstrap virion production, and viral fitness depends deeply on codons and cotranslational kinetics, so no one-shot in silico design yields a viable, virulent virus without extensive experimental selection. Experts in the field are almost universally dismissive of such claims.
