Anthropic previews Model Hardware Standard to let AI agents run lab instruments

Anthropic has opened a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard (MHS), a shared specification that lets AI agents safely operate physical devices, starting with a group of scientific labs and advanced manufacturers.
- Developed with HHMI Janelia Research Campus, MHS lets agents control microscopes, liquid handlers, and robotic arms in parallel, handling tasks from drug discovery experiments to quantum computer laser calibration
- It cuts hardware integration from weeks or months to hours or minutes, enabling round-the-clock autonomous experiments where agents reason through steps, tune parameters in real time, and recover from hardware errors
- MHS is model-agnostic, works with any programmable device, and is accessible via standard protocols like MCP; it will be open-sourced later
The author also notes Anthropic runs a program for AI controlling hardware and experiments (biology-focused), part of a broader push into AI for science.
