Inside OpenAI's agentic software factory: Codex replaces IDEs and pull requests

Gergely Orosz (Pragmatic Engineer) published a deepdive based on interviews with seven OpenAI engineering leaders, including Venkat Venkataramani (VP Eng, Applied Infra) and Joe Gershenson (Core Agent lead):
- Codex takes over: Within a year, Codex went from nice-to-have to the backbone of the company. Nearly all non-engineers (finance, marketing) moved to Codex and ChatGPT Work without a top-down mandate, and everyone gets an unlimited token budget.
- Death of the IDE and PRs: IDE usage has dropped since January as Codex usage surged; pull requests and code reviews need rethinking.
- Agentic software factory: OpenAI runs automated agentic feedback loops — e.g., Perf Factory monitors production and spins up Codex agents to automatically fix performance issues.
- Tooling shift: Hand-built internal tools are gradually being replaced by Codex-generated solutions.
