Google shares a thread on its AI language research. Its language tech, starting with Google Translate in 2006, now powers interactions in 300+ languages reaching 7 billion people—86% of the global population. Google stresses translation alone is insufficient: Gemini 3.5 Live Translate and Transcribe process audio directly, capturing code-switching, pacing, and emotional cues, while underrepresented languages are covered via grassroots data partnerships like WAXAL (Sub-Saharan Africa) and Project Vaani (India) plus the Amplify initiative.
