Engineer's advice for aspiring AI engineers: start in data, grind one big production project
ashishllm · x · 2026-09-15
Responding to the complaint that no one hires fresh grads for AI engineering roles, an engineer lays out a pragmatic path:
- Enter via data roles: Data Analyst positions have low or no entry barriers, are fresher-friendly, and transitioning to AI Engineer afterward is accepted by many companies.
- Accept lower pay for the first 3 years: Most AI Engineer roles require 3+ years of experience, so quietly building real industrial project experience early pays off later.
- One big project beats five demos: Focus on a single productionized project where you handle scale and optimize systems under load — anyone can know concepts; production engineering is what commands a high salary after three years.
