AI researchers pay tribute to Hugo Larochelle: mentor and Montreal community builder

Former OpenAI researcher Liam Fedus paid tribute to Hugo Larochelle, recalling him as a supportive PhD co-advisor during his 'explore-phase' (forgetful Atari agents, training GANs on images of himself training GANs), which led him to large-scale language models for the past 7 years.

MILA researcher negarrz added that Larochelle's YouTube neural network course was her onboarding resource 11 years ago, and credited his contributions to the Montreal community: donations to Tech-AideAI, founding the Montreal AI Symposium, and co-founding Google Brain Montreal.
