Inside China's AI intern arms race: $700-a-day interns, 3M yuan offers and fading windows
创业邦 · wechat · 2026-09-15
Chinese tech giants like ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba are paying AI PhD interns 5,000–6,000 yuan ($700–850) a day, with regular AI internships at 500–1,000 yuan and conversion offers reaching 3 million yuan a year; AI job postings grew 26.3% YoY in H1 2026.
Chuangyebang interviewed five interns earning 1,000+ yuan/day:
- Zhang Mingming (Tsinghua master's, 1,000+/day): algorithm intern at a fintech firm, training 1–2B parameter in-house models, no clock-in or KPI; her biggest fear is AI advancing so fast it may one day do AI research itself.
- Lin Chuan (PKU PhD, 1,500+/day): in JD's talent program working on RL for long-horizon agent tasks, with free housing; notes talent-program quotas are shrinking and bars rising, concentrating pay among fewer people.
- Cheng Yuan (PhD, veteran of several base-model teams): saw ByteDance TopSeed's 2,000-yuan/day interns; says a 100-person base-model team has maybe a dozen people who truly set direction, and panic pricing is cooling.
- Chen Yu (non-CS Tsinghua master's, 1,000+/day): went from mechanical automation through four internships at Meituan, Baidu, Huawei and a startup before landing an AI product role.
- Zhou Kai (C9 master's, 1,200/day): doing post-training and evals; the same role paid 500 yuan last year — he won't plan his future around today's rates.
Common thread: relaxed management and big pay, shadowed by anxiety over AI's pace and their own replaceability.
