Google DeepMind launches SL2T sign-language-to-text model, debuts on Pixel 11 and Gboard

Google DeepMind introduced SL2T, a massively multilingual sign-language-to-text translation model, bringing sign language AI into consumer products for the first time. It powers sign-to-text dictation in Gboard and Live Transcribe on Pixel 11, starting with ASL to English. Deaf users can sign anywhere they'd normally type — searching, drafting messages, or commanding Gemini — with testers reporting signing is faster and more natural than typing. More devices and languages are coming. Roughly 70 million Deaf and hard-of-hearing people use over 200 sign languages that prior tech never served.
