ClaudeMods arrives: Claude Code opens its execution chain to middleware-style plugins

Claude Code lead Boris Cherny announced ClaudeMods is rolling out, with the community already building a Tetris mod that runs inside Claude Code's interface.
- From Function Hooks to Mods: the September 3 proposal upgraded shell-script hooks into typed TypeScript functions that nest like Express/Koa middleware—able to intercept, inspect, modify, or reject tool calls. The mechanism extends to React UI components, button clicks, and admin-level capability restrictions.
- Officially named ClaudeMods on September 9: built-in mods like diff, sec-default and telemetry already appear in the main repo, with the existing diff panel being rewritten as a mod.
- Security findings: early testers showed a hung hook fails silently while risky operations still execute; blocked file writes get retried via other tools; a code-based safety check passes despite flawed input.
- Big picture: Coding Agent competition is shifting from raw model capability to the harness—context, permissions, plugin ecosystems. Anthropic is making a classic platform play: open extension points, validate with its own features, let the community fill the ecosystem.
