Texas governor threatens penalties for data centers defying water disclosure laws

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has directed the Texas Water Development Board to penalize data centers that failed to disclose water usage as required by state law, calling the violations potentially civil and criminal. Drought-prone Texas is the heart of the US data center boom, and Abbott last month also ordered the PUC and Ercot to audit data centers in the interconnection process. EU and Nordic AI hubs are watching closely as water footprint becomes a green metric.
