AI Notetakers May Be Hurting Meeting Recall, User Finds Handwritten Notes Work Better

DumbButtFace · reddit · 2026-09-15

A Reddit user reports that since every meeting now has an AI notetaker transcribing calls — with his company actively encouraging people to stop taking notes — he retains almost nothing from meetings and must re-read transcripts to find his action items.

By contrast, manually jotting down notes (even at the cost of brief pauses) built up memory so well he rarely needed to re-read them. After going back to handwritten notes, his recall and meeting quality improved immediately. The post touches on the trade-off between AI assistance and active cognitive engagement.
