Researchers map a roadmap toward genuine recursive self-improvement in AI

A new arXiv paper by Yi Duan and 32 co-authors, "The Last AI Built by Humans," lays out an autonomy-centered roadmap for recursive self-improvement (RSI). It introduces the Headroom-Closed Index (HCI) to expose flaws in current LLMs, defines a progression from improvement-execution to recursive meta-improvement autonomy, examines RSI across scientific discovery, embodied intelligence and software engineering, and identifies key challenges to achieving genuine RSI.
