AI policy researcher Dean Ball argues that while METR is an excellent organization, it is far from sufficient on its own. The field needs a large, diverse ecosystem of technically skilled and independent assessment bodies, and no single entity—not even METR itself—should be anointed as the sole evaluator of frontier AI models.
