e/acc-Adjacent Lexicon: 'Safety Cartel' Defined as AI Incumbents Using Safety to Slow Rivals
PeterDiamandis · x · 2026-09-13
Alex Wiggins (reposted by Peter Diamandis) coined a dictionary-style definition of "safety cartel": a coalition of dominant firms invoking safety to justify coordinated limits on the pace or terms of competition — industry-wide "pacing," common capability caps, regulatory checkpoints, and even antitrust exemptions.
He argues this describes frontier AI companies pushing industry constraints that slow faster rivals while preserving incumbent advantages — a "regulatory moat" and "incumbent protection" in his framing.
