Altman endorses 'pacing the frontier', OpenAI to add independent third-party evaluators

Sam Altman publicly agreed with Dario Amodei's call to "pace the frontier", saying it has been a primary internal discussion topic at OpenAI in recent weeks. He committed to OpenAI also having independent evaluators with employee-like access.
DeepMind researcher Neel Nanda called it fantastic that OpenAI and Anthropic are actively calling to slow the frontier and will use third-party evaluators to verify agreements — but argued verification mechanisms alone aren't enough: "We need an agreement, with specifics."
