Critic ruima argues Anthropic's "Pacing the Frontier" pledge is less than it sounds: no commitment to slow training or capability research, just third-party monitoring—by METR, a catastrophic-risk nonprofit that has evaluated Anthropic's models and even embedded researchers there. While METR isn't Anthropic-funded, the critic says picking a referee from the same small AI-safety ecosystem and proposing it as an industry template undermines 'independent oversight.'
