OpenBMB open-sources MiniCPM5-2B, a 2B model that tops agentic benchmarks under 4B

OpenBMB has open-sourced MiniCPM5-2B, a dense 2B-parameter model built for reasoning, coding, and tool use on resource-constrained hardware. Artificial Analysis' Agentic Index ranks it highest among sub-4B models with a score of 20, versus 9 for Granite 4.2 8B.

Blogger @akshaypachaar ran it locally behind a constrained CI repair agent on a real issue — retrying checkout with the same idempotency key returned a larger total ($109 first, $118 on retry) — and later put it behind a coding agent on a real repository instead of a benchmark. The verdict: small models can now reason through codebases, use tools, investigate bugs, and fix them locally, punching well above their weight.
