GUI vs API for Computer-Use Agents: ApprenticeBench Team Says Hybrid Is the Future

kohjingyu · x · 2026-09-12

Koh Jingyu published a blog post examining where computer-use agents (CUAs) shine over API-based agents and remaining research problems. The ApprenticeBench team adds a key data point: although full backend APIs were available, wrapping them into MCPs to reach feature parity with native GUIs proved challenging—small issues kept surfacing only by running agents and analyzing behavior, requiring far more iterations than expected. Their conclusion: APIs won't replace GUIs anytime soon; the future of CUAs is hybrid, with a universal digital agent using whatever affordances are available.
